The flipping Z-crystals just seems to be a lore reason why the new Z-moves couldn't be used in the originals.

I'm feeling better that I'm probably gonna end up buying moon but skipping USUM all together. I really wanted to play SM but I heard they were dogshit, considering that the next upgraded version is even more shit makes me feel better about dropping $30 on moon.

This is what I hate about Game Freak. They refuse to retcon anything. In this case, they could just say the Z-Crystals are newly discovered -- not even something they'd have to retcon! They didn't require a new Mega Bracelet in ORAS.
