I've been thinking a lot about this lately and no, Az and his twin brother, the one who later became king of unova, were arceus worshipers
They used the power of the plates, given by arceus himself, as batteries for machines. These machines used the infinite energy arceus used to create the world. When the war started he used that energy in a bigger amount to destroy his brother's kingdom in unova.

Nowhere, it's his headcanon. XY only states that AZ's brother wanted Kalos for himself and organized his own army/force to take control, but after AZ killed everyone over Floette he saw the error of his ways and instead buried the weapon, passing down knowledge of its location to his children before he died. Nothing about Unova is stated or implied at all.

Novel/Concept book that expands on the Pokemon series lore when? I would love to read in depth about the wars, ultimate weapon and so on since it's very unlikely we'll get a detailed story about these things.
