They don't need to remove the guiding story, just recognize what its role is. It's the means to achieve something, not the end, it's not the point of the fucking games. The point boils down to being a Pokemon trainer and going on an adventure in this world. Obviously there will be a story involved in that, but they are tunnel visioning it as a focus.
