I havent played pokemon since I was a kid. Should I torrent and run the games through an emulator? I dont want to piss my money away on a new handheld then a bunch of games, but i will if it means i lose any functionality.

Just emulate. No trading but its whatever if you just want to play some of the old games
Be sure to use a proxy if you're torrenting an emulator. There are Trojan viruses out there. The deepweb is scary.

Play a hack/essentials game, not an official game. I think you'll have more fun with something like Prism or Sacred Gold/Storm Silver considering official games always hold you back in some way.

i think i remember trading on diamond and pearl. there's no way to have the emulator mimic a handheld so i can trade?

you can trade using vbalink from windspro https://windsprocentral.blogspot.com.co
Not OP but I've been wanting to replay Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness but the last time I downloaded the rom, it would just stop working halfway and apparently, this was a common issue with the rom. Anyone have a recommendation for a working rom?
is there some way i can backup my old saves from the cartridge to my computer?

You can move Pokemon between save files through pkhex. You can also transfer wishmaker Jirachi from the colo bonus disk to VBA using a vba link emulator.
I have finished the following games on Citra: Pokemon Sun and Moon, Pokemon Super Mystery Dungeons, Pokemon Gates to Infinity and Pokemon Omega Ruby and Pokemon Alpha Sapphire.
Pokemon XY cannot be emulated on Citra.
