Personally, I was incredibly dissapointed by Platinum when it came out. Them taking two years on it unlike the past three third versions and the early marketing making it sound like the entire region would get a major Winter overhaul and that the Distortion World would be a Light/Dark world deal burned me hard. I was fine with DP, though.

I hope so because I want the 3DS to finally have a mainline game that's worth a shit

the difference with DP, at least for me, is that sinnoh as a region was interesting and didn't feel completely bland
it also had pretty good level design
SM doesn't have that and so I feel like USUM aren't going to be as good as a fix as Platinum was

I would say BW1 Unova was almost as bad as Alola as a region, but it at least had potential for growth that it filled a lot of while Alola's island structure makes it hard to expand outward unless they just pull new islands out of nowhere.
