Singles is the original, and with all it's flaws and pacing issues in pvp, it remains truly fun. Just you and your boy fighting him and his boy.

Doubles fixes some of the pacing issues. Because of the insane numbers some Pokemon deal, you're forced to play a certain way. Decisions become a lot more important.

They both have positive and negative merits.
