Why do people like Lillie as a character in Sun and Moon? I

She's daft. If she just put Nebby inside a Pokeball the second half of the games conflict wouldn't happen. She buys plenty of pokeballs throughout the game, but instead of actually fricking using them she hands them to player! do you not think you should use it on the pokemon who won't stay in your damn bag and keeps causing you trouble.

In general she's just a bad character archetype. she's one of those characters that i see as pandering. she's helpless and constantly relying on you (even when she turns into her "confident" z powered form). she's ditzy and gets lost in even the smallest of towns and despite having a goal (to find the origin of nebby) she gets easily distracted by shopping on 3 different occasions. (Hau'oli, heahea and Malie)

She doesn't feel like a strong character to me. The best thing she does in game is decide to take her mom to kanto to get help, but thats right at the end of the game and i'll have a bit more to say about that in a sec.

At the end of the day, i don't think Lillie is a good character, I think she has the potential to be a good character. She heads to kanto at the end of sun and moon, and its likely she could get some great development. but she doesn't get any in sun and moon so i don't feel like its right to say she's a good character right now.

People defend Lillie because the pieces of a good character are there, they just aren't put together very well. And arguably could never have been put together well in the first place. We're the protagonist of SM, not Lillie. She can't have a character arc that overshadows ours, but since our "arc" in ever game is to just grow strong enough to slap the villains and champ around, Lillie's arc is forced to flatline. Even then it's still more interesting than the constant :^) player character.

Give her a real flaw. Dependency is a flaw, but there's not a lot of good ways for her to overcome it in a meaningful way because her doing something by herself means doing stuff offscreen since we're the main focus. And when things happen that would cause this character to grow in confidence, the moment is given to our character instead.

So give her a different flaw on top. I'd nominate trust issues, since both she and Gladion should have those. It would also create good internal conflict: needing help, but not being able to ask for it. This is admittedly already Gladion's thing, but these two came from the exact same circumstances. I think it can slide.
