Both the games and the anime clearly state multiple times that you have to love and trust your Pokémon if you want to be a successful trainer. It's easy to notice their feelings with poke relax/refresh, their battle behavior clearly changes if you take good care of them.

Midday is known for being unyieldingly loyal to anyone who puts up with its rebellious streak as a Rockruff. It also prefers not to fight, but uses fast movements to bewilder foes when it does.

Midnight loves to battle and prefers goading the opponent into attacking first, then counterattacking. Despite this, it doesn't like being forced to battle and only a trainer it agrees with and can draw out its power will be able to earn its trust.
