They only use female characters that appear in the story regardless of which gender you pick.

Misty is a Gym Leader.
May is a rival.
Dawn is Rowan's assistant.
Hilda/Rosa only appear in the Battle Subway, Iris is a Gym Leader.
Serena is a rival.
The plot is centered around Lillie.

So, Iris was chosen over Hilda, and Lillie was chosen over Chicken.

I don't really think so with Lillie so far. She gets slightly more focus than the other friends, but not really enough to stand out from them much. She just kind of fades into the background when any other friend is being focused on, too.
