It hard checks a lot of mons that are popular right now like Magearna, Tapu Koko, Zapdos, Clefable, Tangrowth, and Mew. It's also the only physical Ghost type that's worth a shit and it can break stall defensive cores decently well.

The UBs were never the full reason why this thing is OU, stop falling for memes.

UB's were only a part of what it did.

A-Maro is extremely solid outside of being a check to top tier stuff. It's got a rare typing, with an entirely unique resistance/immunity list, letting it wall really conventional stuff. It pairs well with a lot of pokemon as a result. This makes its' average defenses shine a lot more, which is important for a pokemon designed to facefuck holes in teams. The reason strong "wallbreakers" like Rampardos fail over and over is because they never get a practical chance to do damage. Maro does. A-Maro also has solid coverage.

On top of its' raw base strength, it has supportive capability with WoW and SR, meaning it'll never be in an absolutely useless position when played to its strengths. This overall makes it really good at regaining momentum and putting the opponent on the defensive, if at least for a turn or two.

It's been a long time since I saw a celestela that wasn't leechprotect, that's why I said slow defensive variants, like those skarmory that don't run at least brave bird for damage. Otherwise yeah, an EQ celesteela would fall within the variants that can indeed touch marowak.
