Every single first title of every single generation has only been selling less and less since Generation 1.
The process is gradual, but it was made quickly apparent even when Generation 2 was still the current gen.
It doesn't really matter what GameFreak does, eventually this well is gonna dry out and only return minor profits because there's no way in hell they'll ever recapture PokeMania with the "reputation" the franchise has garnered among normies and genwunners.

Pokemon is a critic-proof franchise; right when the current audience is becoming disillusioned with the franchise, a newer and younger audience jumps on board to replace them, keeping the cycle going.
