You, Hau, and Lillie, PLUS Gladamine independently, but later he joins you, become monster hunters throughout, and you fight all of the ultra beasts during the main game in some pretty tough battles that involve hunting them down on the islands. During ultra beast fights, ultra beasts are like the totem pokemon, and you can use an extra Z move from your friends (Hau and Lillie, and some other characters later) at any point during the fight. Ultra beasts have multiple HP bars. These fights are hard but perceivable.
Hau and Lillie both get pokemon, and fight you like normal rivals. Hau is still nice and humorous (but seriously, make him more funny). Lillie is still mysterious and reserved but kind of cute. Her cut scenes mostly disappear. You double battle with her against Lusamine at some point before she jumps into ultra space, fighting her fused form.
Later Guzma also comes to help you out, along with Kukui and the Kahunas.
Aether employees get more character, focusing on their shortfallings as people, and an ultra beast to reflect that.
Add a beach based on pipeline where you can fight tough trainers who use actual strategy and items, and sometimes randomly famous trainers show up there to do battle.
Ultra Space is actually a dungeon and exploreable. Lusamine keeps trying to kill you in it.
Long water routes between islands.
Add diving.
Make the islands each their own separate semi-open world with a big jungle and shoreline to explore.
Add like 100 extra pokemon.
