Sky Pillar in RS was perfect. Fairly out of the way, so you needed to explore to find it, had a challenging but doable puzzle to reach the end, and with a cool prize at the end to battle and capture. The feeling of accidentally finding this huge tower and discovering a super powerful dragon at the end is, along with DP Giratina and BW Kyurem, something that I couldn't find in XY, ORAS, and SM.

I dont really hate ORAS, but this change made it clear the game wasnt for me. It wanted to sacrifice a gameplay area for a cool looking story area instead, which showed me where the priorities of the game lay. Though I figured that out by the time I got to New Mauville

In my opinion Giratina in DP was even better, the path to it won't even show up before you get the national dex. Also that creepy atmosphere and not knowing what will be at the end of Turnback Cave at the time was fucking awesome experience

I enjoyed Kyurem in BW a lot as well. Even though it wasn't a surprise to find something since the townspeople had already mentioned it, the creepy atmosphere/music of the town and Giant Chasm, combined with the fact that Kyurem apparently ate people and was (at the time) hinted to be some kind of alien), was really neat.

The sad thing is that they could've done something like this for Necrozma, but nope, it's just in a random patch of grass on Ten Carat Hill. (Though at least they don't force you to catch it, so at least there's that).

The layout of Sky Pillar is weak, and the whole Lost Woods thing used in Turnback Cave is always shit. Giant Chasm and Terminus Cave are better for that archetype's legends, though if I recall the rest of the Trainers—though, having those make it unique—and encounters in Terminus are scaled for if you enter it when you first go by after the Flare finale instead of post-game which is a shame.

The swordtrio in BW sorta felt like that. And I think in theory the legendary bird in XY should have. Part of the problem is the fact that everything is online asap, you can't accidentally stumble on things unless you avoid all Pokémon websites
