Why is Nidoking usually used as a special attacker? Wouldn't

Why is Nidoking usually used as a special attacker? Wouldn't it get the coverage it needs via move tutors and TMs?

It's doing more damage with special moves than physical moves assuming 0evs, ivs and neutral nature, with max evs, ivs and a boosting nature, the difference is even more dramatic

The math doesn't even work like that. EVs and natures factor in before boosts, so with max EVs Nidoking's base special attack reaches something closer to like 130 thanks to Sheer Force. Likewise Mega Mawile has something along the lines of 300 base Attack rather than the expected 210, and Tapu Koko has around 160 base SpA when it's firing off electric moves.

Those boosting abilities really do a number on making otherwise pathetic-looking base stats become godlike.

Mixed or physical Nidoking is a decent lure, but the special sets are much better just because of its insane special movepool that can take advantage of Sheer Force. My favorite set to use right now in OU is three attacks+Stealth Rock.
