Either in a mountain of fakes someone got really lucky (it happens) or someone got the japanese name of Rowlet (Mukuroh = "wood" + "owl") and drew something to fit the name.

Roothoot was a very lucky guess and on /vp/ it's hard to accept that's a thing.

this is probably the most accurate comment yet. most people dont know that roothoot made its appearance before we even had the trademarks, we had 0 info at the time and i might be mistaken but i think he made his appearance only a few days after SM announcement. and when those trademarks came out everyone lost it on /vp wich lead to the great Roothoot and friends war. personally i loved roothoot, more than any other starter to date, and i hope that one day i can play it in some fanmade game

Roothoot was, beyond the shadow of a doubt, real. When Gamefreak heard the design leaked, they went back and created Rowlet so the reveal would be a surprise. But there's literally no way to argue Roothoot wasn't real.
