It's like the core cast of Digimon. The most forced dynamic inside the 1st group of Chosen Children was Taichi and Yamato, and they were at each other's throats every time with the ocassional gang up where the big bad is too powerful. Taichi's interactions were more natural towards Koushiro (his real best friend), Takeru and his lil' sister, and those 3 were the characters he had the least conflict with. In that case, XY gang had a really good chemistry. Another thing is that you really hate overly friendly groups and you want intenral conflicts, partners desserting the group, MC and main girl exchanging blows and third wheelers being utter smartasses who shit on the MC.

At least Ash was forced to use his brain and think some strategies or figuring the gym leader's patterns to go with a counterattack. The only 2 matches where he was fighting without knowing his opponent was Vs. Valerie (X scizzor was admittely asspulled and vs Wulfric Rd. 2 was him going headfirst). SM battles against the island kings wre all about enduring 'till unleashing the OHKO Z-move without considering the damage.
