I'm the opposite, I find Bayleef's color sickly-looking, and prefer Meganium's calm green color. But I like Bayleef a lot among all the middle evolution starters.

I don't find Meganium to be any kind of downgrade from Bayleef. Maybe people are biased because they got used to seeing Bayleef in such a prevalent role in the anime.
