There were some tournaments where they gave the missimg mega stones as prizes and many global missions. Also shiny Tapu Koko was released, standard Magearna as well.

Not a lot of thing, mostly Mega Stone distributions and special battle events, USM are non existent, please undertandu.

SM is acutally faster for breeding thanks to Tauros, you just have to move the finger a little more. Fully ev training a Pokémon takes around 10 minutes once you're setup with power anklets and pokérus. Leveling till 50 is the only thing that might take some time, around 30 minutes in the patch of grass under the Battle Tree.
