Honestly as a kid I wanted to see Ash travel alone with his pokemon like in the first two episodes, it seemed more interesting and I also found Misty annoying and Brock boring, so I can't agree with them being "everything that made gen 1". I'm glad that the franchise hasn't completely given in to nosralgia.

The movie is about Ash and Pikachu's friendship, wich has always been the heart of the anime. It's not about the friendship between Ash, Misty and Brock. They removed Misty and Brock to better focus in Ash and Pikachu. Before anybody brings them up, the new companions serve a role in the original subplot involving Ho-oh, having Misty and Brock fulfill this role would mean to change them anyway since this movie is a retelling rather than vaguely taking place between the anime like the other movies.
