My cousin pronounces Gengar like you would ginger, and it annoys the hell out of me. He's literally autistic btw

What are some pronunciations you hate?
>>
Jeer-a-teen-a

High-dreggion

Jeer-eh-chai

Z-way-luss

Go-liss-o-pod

Vee-vill-eon

Skeptile

Sky-zor

Low-punny

Hoho

Ty-splosion

Rat-uh-tah

All of these I've heard before

Do people actually say Tysplosion? Where do they get the S from?!
>>
Ar-see-us

I guess technically that's correct but I still hate it.

>>33059060
low-punny sounds better than lah-punny anyway

according to arceus movie, it's ar-kee-us...

I'm pretty sure the hard C arkeus is correct, but I don't care I will never stop saying arseeus

My cousin says it the same. not the autistic one a different one
>>
I used to say Jy-ra-ti-na instead of Gi-ra-ti-na. I remember also saying Grew-don instead of Groudon and maybe even saying Kai-oh-gree instead of Kai-oh-gur. I believe I also said Reh-kwa-za instead of Ray-kway-za. I said Dialga as Die-al-ga instead of Dee-al-ga at first, and Phione as Fy-own instead of Fee-oh-neh. Oh yeah, and Uxie as Ook-see instead of Yu-ksee.

I might have said Grovyle as Graw-vyle.
>>
>>33059160
Stop watching English dubs.
In Japanese (and in the English version of Pokémon Battle Revolution), it's pronounced Ar-seh-us.
>>
>>33059060

Is this supposed to be Scizor? How could anyone get it that wrong?

>>
My cousin says Muhgenimum (Meganium) and Villplume (Vileplume)
>>

I always pronounced is lop-unny. Like a lop eared bunny.
>>
>>33059273
Are they retarded?
>>
>>33059224
>They also call Bulbasaur Fushigidane
The difference is that they actually try to keep the major legendary pokemon's names consistent across all languages. The pronunciation of Arceus is the odd one out aside from the legendary birds in gen 1 being Freezer, Fire, and Thunder in Japanese.
>>
>>33059285
No, just incredibly stupid
>>
>>33059219
It's ability is called AR System in Japanese.
>>
>>33059224
Bulbasaur is actually called Fushigidane in Japanese, but Arceus has the same name across both languages. Other examples of Pokémon that do this

>>
>>33059387
That's cool, but in English, it's the RKS System, so in English, Arceus is pronounced "are-kay-us"
>>
>>33059038
I remember me and my friends pronounced Geodude as Teodude and I have no idea why.
We were like 6 years old though and English wasn't our first language so I guess it can be excused. We also stopped when some of the older kids corrected us.

>Maril
>Eipam
and so on.
>>
>>33059482
Doesn't mean I have to pronounce it Ar-key-us, and it doesn't make Ar-seh-us an incorrect pronunciation.
>>
me and my brother used to pronounce kyogre "kai-ohrge"
>>
Poh-KEY-Man

May be because i speak Spanish and "E" is pronounced differently,
>>
I hate it when anyone adds an "s" at the end of the Pokemon's name to pluralize it.

It's "I have three pentaperfect Eevee" not "I have three pentaperfect Eevees" you fucks

Saying "Pokemons" is just as bad
>>
>>33059624
pronounced it like that for the longest time as well
>>
My autist friend convinced me Kangaskhan was Kang-gash-kin in grade school
>>
Around the time when Pokemon first came out in the U.S. there were these Pokemon card cutouts on the back of Lunchables boxes. I saw "Kangaskan" on there and instantly thought it was pronounced "Ka-gascan" (say the gascan part fast). The anime hadn't come out yet so I never heard it said aloud before. I cringe every time I think about how stupid I probably sounded back then.
>>
A friend of mine says Chansey as "Chaunsey" and I have no idea why
>>

>Es and Emm.
>>
This thread made me realize how english is such a stupid, inconsistent language.

Surprised no one mentioned the end of Illumise pronounced as "myse" instead of "me-say."

Granted, it should probably be spelled "Illumisé."

It was always Arseus in English too. They changed it in more recent English media after Nintendo UK complained that it sounded like "arse". The "RKS System" is from such recent media, they're literally trying really hard to make you think they never changed the pronunciation
>>

Anyone who pronounces abbreviations is an asshole. It's shorthand to save on space, not a pronunciation guide. I might type SM, but if I were to read what I typed out loud, I would pronounce it Sun and Moon.

If you say Ray-Quay-Zah,
then you Rayghayzah.
If it were supposed to pronounced that way, they would have spelled it Réquéza or Rayquayza.
There is no precedent for "qua(consonant)" ever being pronounced as "quay" in English, notwithstanding the word "quasar". But "quasar" is spelled with an "s", not a "z".
If it were spelled, Rayquasa, it could be justified. But...
Quasar is short for Quasi-stellar, neither of which contain an "ay" sound.

While Rayquaza has the same name in both English and Japanese, it's pronounced completely differently between both languages.
Japanese: Rek-kuu-za
English: Ray-kway-za

The Japanese name for the Deoxys movie implies that Rayquaza's name at least comes from 裂空 (Rekkuu; Sky Ripping/Splitting/Tearing).

People complaining about English dub pronounciations? You should be lucky.

Here in Italy, since the 2012 release of Pokédex 3D Pro, Nintendo/Game Freak/The Pokémon Company/Whoever decided that we have to use different and basically madeup pronounciations for some Pokémon names, retconning the correct ones we used since some time before. Some examples:

>Char-mel-lay-on (Charmeleon)
>Mook (Muk)
>Mah-reel (Marill)
>Wob-boo-fet (Wobbuffet)
>Tee-rog (Tyrogue)
>Lou-jaw (Lugia)
>Ma-neck-trick (Manectric)
>Glay-son (Glaceon)

Other mishaps from Italian releases:
>Up to 2010, Meowth was pronounced "May-o" in the Italian dub of the cartoon. People was actually pissed off when they started using the right pronounciation
>The Italian announcer of Pokémon Stadium infamously pronounced Blastoise as "Blast-was"
>In the Galactic Battles dub they began for some reason to pronounce almost every "A" in every name in the same way you pronounce the standalone letter in English, so you heard stuff like "Hairy-eh-dos" (Ariados), "Ray-pee-rior" (Rhyperior), "Tire-any-tar" (Tyranitar), "Ann-pharos" (Ampharos) and "May-moss-whine" (Mamoswine)
