I believe I also said Reh-kwa-za instead of Ray-kway-za. I said Dialga as Die-al-ga instead of Dee-al-ga at first, and Phione as Fy-own instead of Fee-oh-neh. Oh yeah, and Uxie as Ook-see instead of Yu-ksee.

Around the time when Pokemon first came out in the U.S. there were these Pokemon card cutouts on the back of Lunchables boxes. I saw "Kangaskan" on there and instantly thought it was pronounced "Ka-gascan" (say the gascan part fast). The anime hadn't come out yet so I never heard it said aloud before. I cringe every time I think about how stupid I probably sounded back then.

There is no precedent for "qua(consonant)" ever being pronounced as "quay" in English, notwithstanding the word "quasar". But "quasar" is spelled with an "s", not a "z".

While Rayquaza has the same name in both English and Japanese, it's pronounced completely differently between both languages.
Japanese: Rek-kuu-za
English: Ray-kway-za

The Japanese name for the Deoxys movie implies that Rayquaza's name at least comes from 裂空 (Rekkuu; Sky Ripping/Splitting/Tearing).

When I was a kid, I seriously used to pronounce Articuno as "art-corny-oh." It only took me to realise I was pronouncing it wrong when I first watched the second movie.

Here in Italy, since the 2012 release of Pokédex 3D Pro, Nintendo/Game Freak/The Pokémon Company/Whoever decided that we have to use different and basically madeup pronounciations for some Pokémon names, retconning the correct ones we used since some time before. Some examples:
