Torchic was Masuda's favorite starter. Even when Treecko was the favorite starter of Gen 3, and Mudkip became a meme (and Swampert being the best of the three on Gen 3), Masuda managed to promote Torchic more that the other two, even having a GBA SP with a Torchic pattern. Then obviously Game Freak gave Speed Boost in Gen 5 to fix its Speed problem, and in Gen 6 tgey gave it a Mega Evolution, but because Masuda couldb't wait ONE FUCKING YEAR it introduced Mega Blaziken in XY as event.

Real talk: I love Blazikens design, even when I first evolved my starter I fell in love with the design. it is on my top 5 favorite starters list. being a good pokemon is just a bonus for me.
