The multiverses are just an entertaining plot device that aren't really important at all. It's probably just a way to make certain legendaries seem more powerful, to make our world (well the pokemon one) seem small in the grand scheme of things, and to give some hack devs the freedom to make wormholes or some shit in Hawaii that literal non-Pokemon can come out of to play.

I thought Ultra Space was just the world between universes. Either way, I agree, but I think they all play a part in the grand scheme of things (the FRLG/RSE verse and the Mega/ZMove verse).

It would be pretty cool if we got a villain that wanted to use the power of Z-Moves and Mega Evolution and the tech that came from Infinity Energy to take over the other universe.

What are the clear signs of a story arc? So far the 'multiverse' is just an excuse for why ORAS is replacing RSE as canon. The UB universe likely will never have any plot relevance whatsoever after USUM, and will probably be reduced to a dedicated portal in following games that allows you to catch the UBs. Annabel coming back is just an easter egg who just shows those fans who may be butthurt that the RSE universes do exist, but again- they're no longer canon.
