You can blame BW for that: while XY had a similar fall between its start and finale as DP (around 2.5% IIRC), BW was the series where the ratings took *the* nosedive. All of this, of course, considering ratings matter.
The anime's success is actually measured in terms of merchandise sales.

If you look at AG's ratings the first half of the series did in the 9's, 8's, and 7's, and only declined to the 6's around Battle Frontier.

DP did 9's and 8's too, but of course as the saga progressed it got down to the 7's and 6's.


Now SM averages episodes between 3.5-3.9 for almost every episode. The show is not even half as popular as it was when AG and DP were going on.

While that is true, I think it's fairly obvious far more people watched Pokemon 15 years ago in the early 2000's than any later time. AG aired directy after the initial fad of the franchise cooled down during mid-Johto, but the anime itself was still incredibly popular and watched at the time.

Basically the anime's ratings overall took a huge slide around 2010, which was DP's last year and the start of BW. So for the entire 2010's every saga like BW, XY and SM has had extremely less ratings, probably because of online streaming and stuff like that, but also far less kids watching it than before.

In the west the anime took a ratings hit once the 4kids VA's change. That's fairly obvious and then it moved to Cartoon Network which was a cable channel.

In the west, Kanto, Johto and Hoenn have the highest ratings in the dub, then it just got progressively less with each passing saga. But I think here it's because "muh 4kids voice actors" were the biggest issue, at least at first.

Considering the writers made the decision back when we were in early/mid Hoenn not to bring Misty back to the cast, why are people so surprised she's been gone forever? The only realistic time Misty had to make a comeback is during/towards the end of Hoenn when her character was still recent and still in more than half the series at the time. Instead the writers banked on May's popularity and Misty was forgotten.

Then when DP was airing the writers didn't even bother to give Misty a cameo. In fact Misty's last episode aired way back in 2005 in mid-AG. They didn't even have her appear for the rest of Battle Frontier.

We only had 3 female companions, Brock was still around, and then just Tracey/Max who were minor. The writers actually kept the main cast fairly small up until they started to give Ash entirely new travel groups from BW onward.

That's also why when DP was airing people still thought old characters could return and cameo, and both May and Gary did.

Since that aspect is gone, they can easily omit the side characters entirely if the plot doesn't need them.
