Are free mode battles the same as playing AG on Showdown? I don't

Bumping with some info of AG. For example, gimmicks like evasion and Baton pass (not full teams) are present and people usually uses average Pokémon alongside one or two ubers.

I assume you mean battling in wifi on cartridge?
If that is true, then no. Battle Spot still puts restrictions on most legendaries while PS AG is inclusive to all mons.

You still aren't allowed everything though. All Battle Spot has the item and species clauses etc. which AG does not have because general Showdown is based on standard PvP battles where such clauses aren't in effect.

For example, on Showdown if you want to use a team full of Assault Vest for some reason, you can do just that. To date you haven't been able to do that in any Battle Spot battle mode because they allow only one of each item per battle (though theoretically they could make a special rules variant allowing it) .

Except you can still use whatever you want in plain old link battles. Just need a friend or another system.
