I haven't used all of them so I can only tell you this much from the ones I've tried out in emerald and firered reruns:

>Eevee
Until you can evolve it, is a decent quick attack and bite earlymon. Is faster and hits harder than zigzagoon and the likes, but doesn't really hold any value until you get hold of an evo stone.

>Vaporeon
Fantastic choice for a water type, will fit almost any team. STAB surf is great specially since you need to carry it to move around. Ice beam and special bite in gen 3 is good too. Is overall the best eeveelution I have ever used in-game and a good first try if you've never used eevee.

>Umbreon
Will never hit hard, but I carried one with confuse ray, toxic, mean look and moonlight once. If its role is to trap stuff and stack on damage it does so perfectly, as it is bulky and before fairies it has only 1 real weakness unless you run into something with megahorn. Might be too passive for most playstyles tho.

>Espeon
My experience with it is similar to pretty much any other offensive psychic. Hits harder and faster than gardevoir if you didn't want to catch the early route ralts, but it didn't do anything unique otherwise.

>Flareon
Its speed is not that hindering in-game, as long as you don't leave it in against some fast water or ground type. Physical shadow ball and dig mixed with special flamethrower is... interesting. Willowisp is cool if you fear its shit defense is a problem.


Other than those, I have no idea what the others do outside of competitive. Leafeon is a defensive sun sweeper but has shit coverage, jolteon is a fast electric type with shadow ball, sylveon is arguably the strongest and glaceon just hits hard if it outspeeds, otherwise just dies. No idea how they play out in game.

Somewhat fast and can learn almost every move. It will never be an offensive powerhouse but can spread status and hazards like no other. Less relevant now in both VGC and Smogon because it can't use Dark Void in the former or baton pass in the latter

Weavile is the epitome of a glass cannon. Fast, can hit hard, but frail. Before Fairy it was a reliable dragon killer and could outspeed a lot of the pokemon it was weak to. It has a lot of coverage moves at its disposal and doesnt fall victim to the eviolite trap a few other cross gen evos do. I always loved Sneasel but Weavile has been a mainstay on my teams since DPPt. Fucking love it.

Primarina has more offensive power than any of the things you mentioned (besides Araquanid maybe but water bubble's stupid), has both STABs and surprisingly good coverage. Oceanic Operetta is super strong.

That's a tough one. I've considered going Bellossom before because it's a bit bulkier and my team's already weak to Psychic. It does get Quiver Dance now though so it has a lot more sweeping potential than Vileplume.

Pretty sure it's one of the best 'mons for in-game Sun and Moon.
Great bulk, amazing Special Attack (the highest of any starter so far) and fantastic movepool - Water and Fairy alone is amazing coverage, but it also has access to Psychic, Energy Ball, Ice Beam and Shadow Ball through TM. Scald is available right before the second trial, which helps a lot with its average (but still decent) physical defense - Keep in mind physical Electric and Grass types are rare, so that helps.
It also learns fun tricky moves like Aqua Jet, Sing and Encore along the way, which are all valid options.
Lastly, while speed should be a problem, it still outspeeds most of Alola, making it practically a non-issue.

All in all it was by far the most reliable Pokemon in my Sun playthrough and, even with extremely valid options like Wishiwashi and Araquanid, it's probably the best Water Type in the game for a normal playthrough. Smogon ranks the Popplio line S rank in its in-game tiers and it's used in speedrun the whole way until you get Lunala.

As for competitive, it's one of the hardest Pokemon to switch into once you get it safely on the field (which isn't that hard to do when you are a Water/Fairy).
Unless you have Chansey or Blissey in your team, it's a crapshoot whether it's going to OKHO your switch-in or not thanks to the moves mentioned above and HP fire, and this is true both for UU and OU.
It's great in Battle Spot too, where having a 195 Z move with a 126 Sp.Atk stat that can be boosted by Torrent simply lets it 1v1 pretty much everything in the game while also having access to utility moves such as Aqua Jet and Perish Song.

All in all it's a great, very unique Pokemon, and, for me, it has been really fun to use in every single situation I tried it.

Primarina has one of the best type combinations in the game, combined with some neat coverage tricks and a colossal 126 special attack. Taking damage only makes it stronger, with specs torrent hydro pump hitting like a nuclear blast.

I'd say yes, but at the same time I don't think it'll blow you away. Cryogonal's basically Special Avalugg, for reference if you've used Avalugg before. Can sponge a crazy amount of special hits and even set up Reflect or Acid Armor to patch up its mediocre physical defense. Good for Rapid Spin in that it has Levitate, but the tradeoff is weakness to Stealth Rocks. STAB Freeze-Dry's never bad and it can catch stuff like Kingdra and Water/Grounds off guard, plus a great 105 speed allows it to outspeed the common 100 speed mons. Unfortunately, almost all of its good coverage moves are physical, and it doesn't have much specially, but moves like Explosion and Knock Off help a bit. Overall, one of the few bulky ice types to actually do its job despite its myriad weaknesses, but unfortunately those weaknesses in strong supereffective hits and physical moves in general do too much to Cryogonal for it to handle. Still, definitely a great special side of a defensive core. Arguably better than Regice.

I've actually only used it myself once, but it was in a random battle where the opponent had an Arceus-fighting spamming Judgment and 5 of my mons were weak to fighting. Cryogonal was still able to switch in and stall the low PP move with Recover, taking around 60 percent from it. I kept it in back with low health and was able to Recover and preserve it for a pivot late game. Not great, but not to be underestimated.
