If you paid attention to his dialogue you would know that he goes through a phase of confusion and denial before changing his ways. Also the Celebi event in HGSS gave him good reason to be how he was in the first place, among other things added to him in those games.

I think that his growth was way better than lillies and many of the other rivals. He's not attached to you at this hip, he does his own thing and learns them on his own with you being around sometimes. Watching him change on his own was really fun.

Considering Hau isn't a rival, you've got a big problem there. Gladion = rival, Hau = Friend. Since Gen 3 you've always had one rival and at least one friend.
