I was torn between Feraligatr and Typhlosion for the longest time, and i think many people were as well, which makes the division between the two so more vibrant while Meganium always gets the short end of the stick.
Meganium grew on me overtime as a result, so she rounded out to make johto my favorite starter trio.
From my experiences, I see Typhlosion fans more on the offensive, especially in fanart/'muh thunderpunch' memes.

I think people were disappointed in how it performed in-game. The Chikorita line has more Pixiv results than the Totodile line, if it makes you feel better.
Feraligatr is still more popular in the west.

As a kid for me it was the perfect mon since it learned Razor Leaf right after you got it. Of course that didn't mean much since you fought bellsprouts, then a flying gym, then a bug gym, but it's still the best move.

Also it should learn Leech Seed instead of Poison Powder. That move is garbage and it's not even /poison.

The fact of the matter is that meganium is objectively the worst starter. Objectively is a word that gets thrown around a lot here, but it's correct in this case; out of all the starters, meganium gets the least use in battle spot singles and doubles, and is ranked lower than any other starter in smogon (considered unviable in PU, the lowest official tier). This is because there isn't anything than meganium can do that another pokemon can't do better. Need a defensive grass type in game? Bellossom is better. Maybe you need one in competitive? Try vileplume, or practically any grass type that gets synthesis + aromatherapy. "But wait," you say, "it can use swords dance + eq and is bulky enough to set up!" Torterra is right over there, featuring a much better attack stat, ground STAB, rock moves, and rock polish.
Now, don't get me wrong, I like meganium. It's got a certain simplicity to it that venusaur lacks, and hibiscuses are god tier ornamental plants. But pretending there isn't a reason people avoid/ignore it is stupid. It's not a good pokemon, and that's a huge determining factor of whether people like it or not. I know people who only liked serperior out of all the gen V starters, but it was so bad in game they ended up dumping it for other grass types. Like the pokemon you like, but don't be willfully ignorant.

Most people, apparently, based on the fact you had to make this thread in the first place. Did you want me to blindly agree with all your points? There's no helping starter warriors here. Maybe the Johto starters will get helped out with megas down the line, but until then, meganium is the worst of the three, and that informs a lot of decisions. No point in arguing further.

It always bothered how Meganium has no leaves on it. The most notable part of the line is the leaves on their heads, but Meganium replaces those with two stamen that as far as I can tell don't do anything. Feels like such a downgrade somehow.

Meganium is just bland. It's not particularly impressive, it doesn't have a unique typing, and it's bad even in the game itself (which is REALLY saying something).

On the other hand you have Typhlosion who was Charizard 2.0 only it ravaged the game harder at the time and Feraligatr which appeals to most dudes and also rapes the game. It's easy to see why Meganium is often overlooked.
