Bianca and Cheren weren't shit. They had personalities and their own problems they had to sort out, they had development and growth, and they didn't hold your hand throughout the game.

Trevor, Tierno and Shauna had zero personality, zero growth and development, they did zero to affect the plot or create any meaningful relation to the player, and they were utter GARBAGE at battling.

Bianca and Cheren might have been friendly rivals too, but at least they weren't bad.

Also, May/Brendan were the first friendly rivals, OP, so you failed at that too. You also forgot Barry and Ethan/Lyra.

I don't think anyone really minds the whole 'friendly rival' thing as long as the rivalry is actually their - that being somewhat challenging battles. Bianca and Cheren have teams with decent mons with coverage moves to boot. Tierno/Shauna/Trevor all just have shitty teams (that bridge battle with tiernos roserade only knowing petal blizzard holy fuck) which make encountering them seem much more of a chore and this only further emphasises their shitty personalities. If they had decent teams no one would whine as much as they do.
