Oh and I didn't answer the question, attempting heavier story presence like the recent games would probably end up a lot more enjoyable if whatever plots they came up with maintained either of the more subdued atmospheres of the first two generations. And even without that I still think the tone and atmosphere was easily the best in those games.

If you consider the game dark from that, then the last three generations are fairly dark too.

What's unique to the first two generations are they don't get quite as in-your-face about things. They feel more subdued and grounded.

I would like to say that the storylines and mons and characters would be more interesting and impactful. Though, I personally I wish the games never became as complex and they currently are that is the thing that really bummed me out more than the childish themes. Special/ physical split is good imo, abilities are great too. but the natures, ev/ivs mega evolutions, z moves detract from the fun factor.

It would be nice to see more cubone-esque backstory pokemon. And perhaps a change in the art direction as well. New art looks like fish face,low brow, trendy bullshit. Original Ken Sugimori style had so much personality. Even getting Toshihiro Ono to design some stuff would be a welcome change in my book
