What would Pokemon be like if trainers and pokemon were actually friends, partners and had real, deep relationships and character development?
I've honestly always been put of by this master-expendable pet/slave relationship system.

uhhhh what? you don't make bros each play through that you stick with no matter what?
I wouldn't know how that feels. I'm an emotionless husk, haven't felt anything except bitterness and emptiness for a better part of my life. Incapable of emotion, I trudge through this meaningless life shunning away all those close to me.

>he has "relationships" with his pokemon instead of training them into tools for battle

>most only see the light of the day when they have to fight
>either kept in balls or forever forgotten in a box when not needed anymore
>their free will is taken away the moment they're captured in a pokeball
>obey every single command without a second thought
Yeah...right.
Pretty much any monster collector is going to ultimately feel that way except for the one-two you might see who are also story characters, like the Incarni in DQM Joker, or Jinbanyan in Yo-kai Watch 2, and when they cease to be real characters after the credits it hits like a sack of hammers. Some will have constant dialogue of some sort from your monsters, like following Pokemon in HGSS, or the Farm dialogue in the Digimon Story series, but it all being canned quickly dispels any illusion that may bring on its own.
It's up to the player to view your monsters as more than just zeroes and ones.
