Would you like to see pokemon teams that aren't consisted of Lando-T, UB's and Tapus? I which you have a gigantic pool of viable mons, each coming with its owns pros an cons, from which you can choose whatever tactic you want to compose your own 6 to use a strategy that you came up with. Endless possibilites.
But nah, fuck it, let's have Ledians and Kricketunes of this world and ridiculously overpower some legends. Also don't forget to pander to the audience with extra buffs for already strong and min-maxed mons, which will only deepen the powercreep.
Balance is what keeps this franchise from rising to the respectable competetive scene

This could be approached in some ways, f.e. design the weaker ones to mostly supportive, or have their gimmick help be rather unique that the skilled players could pull this off with the right setup, moveset etc. Also it would be cool if different mons would react differently to the level of happiness (throught their abilities) - caring about them would make them stronger what would be rather sweet and would tie idealy to the whole theme of the games.
Or the most logical and easiest to do - simply ban legendaries from comptetitive, just like in any other multiplayer game they ban the broken characters to keep it balanced. Let us have fun with their broken power in singleplayer or in free play but get them out of competetive. This could be that simple, easy to explain why they are banned and would reshuffle the meta significantly. Also, don't min-max the pseudos and remove Megas.
