Maybe the Totem gives you a specific Z crystal for that totem, while you must defeat the captain/kahuna to get the z crystal of the type.
Ex. you beat Totem Lycanroc to get "Lycanrocium Z", then you beat Olivia to get "Rockium Z".

Shitty lighting and shading choices =/= no shaders are present

Also I was just talking about the shitty softglow effect SM added to the game when talking about how it made the lighting worse, but I checked both just now to make sure I wasn't talking out of my ass and SM actually did remove the slightly darker shading XY/ORAS had at night in battle, wow

Doubt it, it would feel pointless to do that because these moves are so specific. Why would you care for a Lycanroc stone if you dont use it in your party? Getting it from a NPC sure but a whole trial?

One of the "leakers" said that Ilima's trial was going to be relocated to Ten Carat Hill... Why he'd switch from a Normal to a Rock specialist is beyond me, but there's that.

Lycanroc could be a Pokemon of a plot important character, and so would be Mimikyu.

Or maybe they are totems of all new trial captains.
