What is your least favorite method of evolution and why is it

Because half the items are a pain to fucking get, I have no friends and the GTS is either a lottery or a waiting game.

I think item evolution are pretty dumb in general.
There's only three fucking pokemon that evolve with the thunderstone. Pikachu, Eevee and Eelektrik.

The items themselves often have other uses
Trading is a good altruism & friendship mechanic, trade-then-trade-back is not. Trade evos are almost exclusively the former outside of GTS. For GTS, it's rare for someone to actually give away a rare item to a complete stranger alongside a Pokemon
I have no friends to trade with & usually emulate nowadays anyway

I want to agree with you but I also don't because there was only one ice stone in SM and I feel as if there is always a similar problem with stones other than fire/thunder/leaf in that they only put enough to evolve everything one time, or then you have to go and hang out at pelago which I imagine is tedious as hell.
Item evolution suck but now especially I can just use my points from bank to buy the items, and I could fill the gts up with level 1 things holding the items and lose nothing.

Trade evolutions aint that bad, I buy 2 DSs for that. The ones I can't stand are Hsappiness. I tried breeding for a good IV HA Raichu once, and before I could make a new Pikachu to pass on the good genes to a slightly better partner I had to happiness evolve a fucking Pichu because Pichu is too small and sexually immature to breed. Damn babies, why can't I just have pedo Pikas that will breed with babies and shit?

The mossy rock isn't so bad because it's always relatively early in the game. The ice rock is always at the very end somewhere making glaceon pretty much not attainable for use in a play through unless you have two games or evolve it really early and transfer it to a new game and then you just get robbed of the 'raising it from wee little eevee' experience.

I liked it when Pokemon Conquest made use of this, since right ight after the opprutunity to get Glaceon you go to the Dragon kingdom. Glaceon is probably the best ice type you have access to, but that means you're handicapping yourself for the first 80% of the game

Trading holding an item is always a pain in the ass because, more likely than not, the item in question is a pain in the ass to get. More importantly, it means you have to deal with another person in order to get it done.
Worst part is if you have a shiny and you need to evolve it. How do you trust some random fucker on the internet to do the trade and not just immediately disconnect once they have your shiny in their hand? And even if you do have a trustworthy friend to work it, you still need to be around at the same time in order to do it.
The only other option is to buy a separate 3DS and a different game to trade to, and not everyone can afford that.

How you retcon all trade evolutions?

If it evolves by trade with no other requirements, make it evolve by happiness. That way you can still evolve them whenever you want, assuming they aren't already level 100.
If it evolves by being traded while holding an item, let the player use that item to evolve it as though it was an evolution stone. This way, the player still needs to get the item before they can evolve it. You could also let them evolve by leveling up while they hold the item in question, but that'd be annoying for the 3 or 4 people who actually use Clamperl, since it sucks without the Deep Sea Tooth/Scale and having to cancel the evolution every level would get tedious.
If it evolves by being traded for a specific Pokémon, let it evolve by leveling up while the other Pokémon is in the party (like Mantyke does with Remoraid). It probably wouldn't make much sense with regards to the Karrablast/Shelmet lore (if you evolved a Karrablast like this, it would "steal" the Shelmet's armor without actually removing the armor), but who really cares about that?
