If you want to play one, play Platinum, it probably saved Gen 4 from being bad.

I was 18, and no. I think I died once on the way up to Snowpoint city, and then once or twice again against Cynthia. I found it more challenging than Ruby/Sapphire, though, which I played when I was 13, since I literally never lost in that game until the Battle Frontier.

Hardest game by my recollection was Gold/Silver. Maybe it was just the wonky level curve, but I remember really struggling on the Elite 4. And of course, Red kicked my ass for days. But I was also 11.

Hell, the only battle I can remember that even slightly approached difficulty (as in i actually found out what losing all my pokemon looked like) in the entire series for me was Whitney's Miltank back in silver. And really that was more 'annoying' than anything Id call hard.

So either I'm a strategic god the likes of which are unknown by man and the pokemon games were actually an elaborate test by aliens to discover the ultimate pokemon master and save their race, or the games have a 'No drooling mongoloid left behind' approach to their design that has honestly made me a little uncomfortable with playing them for many, many years now.

I would have been 17. It wasn't that hard as I was used to Pokemon, but it had some annoying sections. Also Pearl was my first game since Crystal, since I had skipped Gen 3 because I was "trying to grow out of Pokemon" during the ages of like 13-15.

Platinum was already out when I played DP for the first time. I might've been about 11 or 12, maybe even 13. (I've had more than one savefile on Diamond)

I don't think it was very hard. But it was somewhat hard, because I only trained my starter.

Ten, got it day it came out and I had played all the prior games to that point. It was easy, like all of them. It did get me to stop soloing the games with my starter though when my Torterra got KO'd in the seventh gym and my Staravia I used just for Fly up to that point somehow got some KO's in and caught up in that gym alone. After that I caught two more Pokemon to use and in all later playthroughs of games I started using teams of six.

I was 11 I think, bought it day one. I only remember struggling against Maylene's Lucario and Cynthia in general, but otherwise the game wasn't that hard.

I did think it was hard because I won't lie. It was the first Pokemon game entirely designed not to be cheesed by the starter. Through Gen 1/2/3 I just blazed through with the starters as a kid. So I felt like I was being punished for using one mega mon in D/P and learned more about team composition.
Granted. These were my first games after not playing Pokemon in nearly 6 years.

Get an old used DS Lite and get BW1 and 2. Grab a copy of HGSS if you can, though they're expensive. If you decide you like it, XY was nice, too.

Also, you need a DS Lite to play BW/BW2, otherwise the graphics get stretched on the 3ds, especially the 3ds xl. A lot of people complain about the way it looks but it's mostly their hardware. DSi works well for it too, but if you decide to transfer mons from your Ruby then obv you'll want the lower cartridge slot.

Don't bother with DPPt. Some might say Plat is worth it but it was really boring imo. Plus, there might be remakes in a few years anyway. Just wait for those.

I think I got both Platinum and White when I was 18 because it was during the summer holidays before my first year in college. I didn't find Platinum hard, I thought it was really fun, I just didn't have a HM slave so I made all my pokemon from my main team some HMs and it was a bit annoying. I didn't know there were so many HMs in gen 4.

I really want to replay all the DS pokemon games someday so next time I play Platinum I'll be more careful and get a HM slave.
