Maybe its just me, but I haven't had any loss of progress and I've done many short Johto runthroughs of the game at max throttle. I still get the glitchy sprites once in a while but the game doesn't crash for me.

HGSS is still my favorite in the franchise that I have replayed over and over again but god damn I would be lying if I said it didn't have those glaring flaws.

Except if you use a team of six. The only way you'll be at levels 38-40 at Clair without offset grinding is if you use a team of four or less. Even if you have a six mon team and you battle every single trainer and beat every wild encounter, there simply isn't enough EXP to be at those levels.

Why do people even grind against wild Pokémon? Just grind against the boss. They do have multiple Pokémon after all.
That said, the only time I ever needed to grind was in Silver and that was because I was 9/10 and didn't know what I was doing. I just beat up Will's first couple Pokémon until I could beat his whole team. No need to fight some puny wild Pidgey. You also have the Pokégear rematches if you can't even beat the boss's first Pokémon.

And when do you have your full team? Do you pour your exp into raising and boxing every early route Pokemon? Do you skip every trainer? Because this sounds like what youre doing.

Anyway youre using the "level curve" meme wrong. GSC/HGSS's level scaling sucks because its so easy to get overleveled. If you are falling behind you are doing a lot of things wrong.

Hg/Ss requires you to use traded mons to keep the levels up. Have a second DS and access to Platinum?

No. I would catch a pokemon, and if I want to use it, I'll add it in the team. If not, I'd add it in the box I tested this multiple times with multiple parties of six pokemon with at least 3 of them consisting of no grinding. You'd only be overleved before Morty, and after morty since everything is regulated around the mid 20s, you'll definetely be underleveled by the time you get to clair.. I've always ended up around levels 32-36 by the time I reached Clair, and when I get to the E4, I would be around levels 36-40. I fought every trainer possible, I explored every optional cave and dungeon and I would still be around these levels. Theres just too many NFEs in the game for you to be overleveled with a team of six after morty.
