It's a legendary from (presumably) Ultra Space. Though this still has to be confirmed in USM. Solgaleo and Lunala on the other hand are confirmed to originate from Ultra Space through the research on Cosmog which claims it to be an Ultra Beast, making them Ultra Beasts in that sense, though they are still classified as legendary Pokemon.

Does this look like light absorption to you? Lunala reflects light. That's what the Moon does.

As you said Necrozma refracts light (it's a prism), but it can also absorb it, since it's black and feeds on light.

Maybe Necrozma is like stars, their color can be red, orange, yellowish, white or blue, but it skips over green.

I was expecting that it'd sort of morph into something else or combine with some other things in a more realistic way.

Right now its torso is that weird upside down dragon head, and bizarrely Lunala is STILL using it as a chestguard while I can't see it on Solgaleo (that thing on its head is much smaller and doesn't even resemble it).
