Charizard can provide really nice bonuses 2-4 times a day if you combine slowpoke, berry strat is boring. It's slightly faster yes.
Charizard is also the most expensive and a jack of all trades, so think about what you need more. JP? Diamonds? Progress? Coins? A lot of these things are circular.

I would save Charizard for after you get slowpoke since slowpoke's immediately useful (6 extra training sessions from piplup if candy'd or double litten jp if bought)
Shaymin is more useful for berry strat but still can't go wrong with coin or JP increasing decorations. I personally went with parasect and lampent.

Never upgrade any training. In fact, never use training. Keep your training points maxed at all times so that the only event that can come from league matches is one that gets you more coins speeding up your ability to upgrade berries.

If you open all of your 1-20 balls you can save the higher level ones for gold karps with their 150 bonus.

Nah you didn't really fuck up. There are lots of support candy from upgrading and pikachu's JP reward value constantly increases regardless of support candy, it's just that piplup/rowlet/litten benefit the most from candies.
Plus you'll hit level 51 eventually and be forced to increase other things and get support candy like that.
If berry stratting then your biggest issue is JP and I would personally either invest in litten for large JP drops or slowpoke for double activations on piplup Charizard or litten.

This makes it worth repeating Luxury League 3 for Rank Up bonus candies.

There's no wrong way to play, since everything you put coins/diamonds into will help in some way. You are, however, going about things inefficiently.
So, you put all your money into training gear so that you only have three berries? Get as many coin multipliers together as you can, buy whatevers available, and focus on maxing out the smaller stuff first.
Get enough candies to max out piplup so you can make the most of training. Stay on 1.02 so you can exploit the Expert League 3 to get diamonds.

That's about the only advice you can get, there's not much to the game and most shit is totally random.

For people that are using the 2 berry strat, how much JP is each berry giving you by the time you clear Expert League 3? And is there a cap on the maximum rank a berry can get to?

I doubt this. Most people who take the grind seriously I think just can't afford it. You'd be surprised how little you care about when you have the means to just throw money at it.
