HGSS are pretty much straight upgrades. GS is fun but only if you pick certain mons, since certain others don't get useful enough moves and mon access is limited, so it's hard to 'go back'. For example, Heracross has no good STAB till late levels, since no Brick Break (TM, Gen 3) or Close Combat (Gen 4) and Megahorn comes really late in its level-up.

Honestly, unless you really want to experience the games in their original form, you wouldn't be missing much. They were great games, but you won't get anything that you didn't get in HGSS except nostalgia, and it doesn't sound like that's a factor for you.

Not many other trainers followed suit. Lance, I think, is the only semi-important NPC to have a pokemon out of pokeball during the game.

No option to turn it off. I think if it was an optional thing I could have tolerated it more.

Anyway, the feature isn't offensive outright. I can sort of understand why people like it but if it were to ever return I really do wish they have an option to disable it.
