Yes. And you can even hack it to play RSE on the virtual console if you like, as well as getting the 3ds titles for free. And the DS games would be cheap as shit since you can buy a flashcart to emulate them too.

Aside from the 3DSXL if you want to fold it, it's the only 3DS model worth getting, yes. All the other models are more expensive for basically nothing at all.

Also worth mentioning, it might just be my imagination, but I swear it feels like this thing actually runs a bit better than the regular 3DS, and it doesn't take as long to load stuff

Hacking your 2DS isn't illegal. It's just against Nintendo's ToS for using their online services. Pirating games opens you up to legal problems and you might get detected if you go online. I didn't bother hacking my XL because I want to go online with my games and I have a job to pay for the games I want to play.

If you just want something to play games and you want to play them now I think the 2DS is a good choice. 80 bucks just isn't that much money. I have to wonder if the switch is going to get a version of Sun/Moon, though. I remember people saying that the textures on the cart were pretty high res and Nintendo's new platform appears to be very successful. We may see Pokemon come to it. But that's a "maybe" and if it does happen, it may not happen for years.
