Well you have Gen II and Gen VI for that. USUM seems to be sprucing things up a lot too from the dead, barren Alola of SM.

At this rate the 3DS could still live for years yet. Last year it sold more games than any other year in it's lifespan, and a new 2DD model was just announced. And I can't really picture playing Pokemon on the switch because the system doesn't have two screens. Best case scenario though would be a genuine 3DS successor.

I'm still upset we never got a Z version. I feel that XY are the weakest games in the series in almost every aspect, but gen 6 still could have redeemed itself with a Z version, just like Platinum did with Diamond and Pearl. But nope.
