They didn't quite say "additions". They said it's an alternate story set in the SM universe. A parallel world so to speak.

It's probably an alternate Alola with different events leading into the story. Like, for example, Kiawe might not be in the game because he actually got to study abroad. Maybe Sophocles' brother is still a Captain due to a more lax age limit in this universe. Olivia got a husband. Hapu's grandpa or whatever never got into that accident and is still Kahuna. Sophocles was publicly executed for conning the entire Alola region into using the Festival Plaza. Lusamine is still insane but Lillie is a total momma's girl who is completely on her side. Guzma became a Captain instead of a burnout.
