"Third versions" are an outdated concept and a product of their time, it was literally the reason why we assumed they stopped doing them in the first place in favor of sequels and remakes, because the last true third version was eight (8) years ago.
Just because it was okay then, does that necessarily mean it's okay now? I think a big indicator of the change in business mindset between then and now is that third versions then were just one game, one game that gave you the best of the initial two games that released before it as well as improvements and new content--USUM is two (2), and it is not a sequel.

Outdated according to who?

It's not their fault that you just concluded that they would stop doing these
People still keep buying them. They're not going to stop. You're overthinking this.
It was ok then. It is great now

is there legitimate source to say it won't be a sequel ?

except they didnt buy them is why it was assumed they stop. they undersell compared to the originals by a vast amount and now that is being split into two.
this will affect the sales of the next generation, as most people aren't very fond of buying an obsolete version if a definitive one will come out half a year later. people are too smart for this shit nowadays

I think the issue is that the third version requires so little work compared to a new game that releasing more or less the same product one year will still yield plenty of attractive profit for GF
