I highly expect the Ultra Beast arc to be done in XY style with AshGreninja returning to fight the Ultra Beasts and stay for the entire arc (like Charizard did in BW), and I wouldn't be surprised if Serena gets her cameo around then too. I expect a huge turn around in the later half of SM.

It's easy to forget the current batch of episodes were planned months ago before the writers/studio was able to see the reaction to SM, so these eps were in pre-production for a while. Once they get to the later half though they'll realize what people want out of the anime again,

I've noticed the "NOT-SHIT SUBS" release for the original, Advanced and DP series (as well as their movies) are incomplete. Are there missing episodes for the other series?

Should I fill in the gaps with the dubs (which I don't mind other than having to wrap my head around the name changes) or are there complementary sub releases?

A viewing order for pre-XY series would be welcome too.

Most of OS and AG aren't subbed, and neither is half of DP (mainly the first half). In OS and AG, the dub (4kids) is tolerable to watch until two-thirds of the way through AG, when it switches to the shitty TPCi dub. From there on, you will have to bear with TPCi until subs pick back up around the second half of DP.

The main warning for the 4kids dub is that they change way too much of the dialogue, oftentimes for no good reason, such as pulling a bunch of shipping stuff between Ash and Misty out of their asses.

The dorky wordplays in the TPCi dub script make it worse on the whole than the 4Kids dub's writing could ever be, from my standpoint. Everyone agrees TPCi handled Team Rocket worse than 4Kids did with the writing given all the "Dig it," "Oy vey," "Lugs," alliterations, puns, etc, but even Ash & co. had much less "Super psyched" type lines before TPCi took over.

That's not to mention they didn't really change most of the dialogue in the 4Kids days (common misconception), only about 20% of it was changed like those shipping hints you mentioned, 4Kids was 80% accurate with the writing (overall)- even Dogasu admitted that back in 2011 as one of their dub's good points.

The Pokemon dub is still bearable during AG: 4Kids kept 100% of the BGM in the Shorts & the three Movies they dubbed there, the voice acting was fairly good, and the script writing wasn't that bad reading through Dogasu's compares- there's a lot of times they barely rewrote anything, in reality.

There's still the issue of too much music replacing in the Anime dub itself (although, the AG Anime dub keeps more of the OST than XY or SM's Anime dubs do, 25% was kept holistically there, which beats the 14% average of the XY dub seasons and now 15.3% for Season 20) & some weird badge case/paint edits, but the dub was nowhere near the shit TPCi has turned it into.

The dub of the Anime was at its best during Seasons 2-3 (even his holier-than-thou Dogasu has admitted it), though, 4Kids left 70% of the OST alone then & they didn't edit much or rewrite much, either. The Movies, they fucked up early on in contrast, though.

But yeah, the 4Kids dub was definitely better than the TPCi dub, albeit that may not be saying much, but the dub was not the absolute tripe it is now.

The first 8 Pokemon dub seasons didn't have a black screen in the credits, it was a side screen with a shortened version of the dub OP on the right with the black credits on the left.
