The division of screentime this saga is odd as hell. Mallow, Lana and Kiawe don't have many episodes dedicated to them at all. They just give them various moments in all the episodes dedicated to the group as a whole. Most of SM is still Ash-centered to begin with, so with such a large cast this saga they don't seem to be able to give everyone things to do.

It showed promise but it was ultimately disappointing. No, it doesn't need more soulless characters, atrocious 3D backgrounds, bullshit special snowflakes, or plots that go nowhere if not right off a cliff. lillie/mallow is the may/drew of the current anime, it's playing keepaway from the larger ship that came before it.

Sophocles will have a larger role later on due to the fact that he's the only captain to challenge you at the league in the games. Maybe he'll even end up taking away Lillie's spot light if they don't hurry up and get the skull/aether plot moving along before the next games arrive

So I've watched some battle clips on youtube and here's what I gotta say:
animation is fucking great- everything has weight and the movement isn't snappy, choreography is really good as well.
But the one thing that bothers me a lot and bothered me even when I was a kid is constant cuts. It sometimes makes a battle utterly confusing and a huge mess. You'd think the got better at it after 20 years but not really
Overall I think it's still pretty nice to watch. I might get back to ashnime after dropping it at BW

I think they can stretch it out more because there's no female companion quest to do. In AG they made 15 Contests between Ash's Gyms and Frontier Brains. In DP they had 11 Contests, in XY they had 5 showcases.
