They're weak. Their gimmick is that they give off light, if you're one of those people that think Fairy = Light. And they're generally peaceful, obscure fish.

Awarding them Fairy type would give them everything they desperately want. Water/Fairy would not only make a lot of sense, but it would make them stronger and more interesting as Pokémon. It's generally stupid that they DIDN'T do this.

If anything they shoudl've been part flying, but yeah using fairytype to retcon them into something useful was probably the last real chance we had to salvage them. Short that, Alola could've been a reasonable excuse to at least make them THE generic common fish since it's a tropical region, but we didn't even get that.
