That was the whole point. He needed to be humbled to learn his place. He actually grows as a character, and its reflected well with Crobat evolving. Gladion is a static character who barely appears in the game and has little reason to be your rival.

We aren't talking about difficulty. Both are easy to beat, especially when they have similar teams.
