I gotta make a haunted mansion dungeon for my group's next session in 2 days, give me some ideas.
I'm playing PTU, by the way.
>>
>>32510080

Are there going to be any people in the mansion or just pokemon?

Don't be afraid to put pokemon besides ghost types in there. Its always cool to see some unexpected pokemon like maybe a Cubone or some Trubbish or something.
>>
>>32510101
Only pokemons and maybe some ghosts or ghost trainers.
Long story short, my 3 players played in a pokemon tournament a while ago and I introduced an character in the form of a mysterious little girl with an eerie aura surrounding her who seemed to have supernatural powers and only used an overpowered Gengar, with which she was wiping the floor easily with all the other participants, even with 3 pokemons allowed. She was about to defeat one of my players when she decided to retire before he could, she was there only because she wanted to have some people to play with. She thought the group could be more fun to play with at her own house, she disappeared into nothingness and left a mark on their map to lead them to her mansion.
After finishing the tournament, traveling a bit and taking on their 3rd Gym they are now ready to visit the little girl. Unsurprisingly, she's a ghost (pretty sure the players got it) and has thought of creepy ways to have fun with them. There's also a deeper meaning to her invitation, another reason that ties into the region's lore and one of the campaign (planned it to be pretty long) central points, but it's a bit too long to talk about and I should explain about a lot of other characters and factions involved.

tl;dr, They get in the mansion, get trapped in, have to fight some Ghost Pokemon and maybe human ghosts while exploring and solving riddles and then there's a final battle against the overpowered Gengar, which is an uncatchable Totem Pokemon boss.
>>
>>32510218

>Totem boss

That's awesome, the last time I played a tabletop was before gen 7 so it wasn't a thing for me at the time.

Its always best if you pre plan out what treasures are in a dungeon like any held items, TMs, or anything like that. It's always cooler than just throwing around random shit on the fly.

Also find a way to throw my boy Shedinja in there somehow. Probably hidden away since everything in there can faint him but, he's cool.

Also, maybe you could hide away some fossils in a glass case or something and say the mansion owner was a collector?
>>
>>32510065
Oh sweet they did do a Sun and Moon update, for some reason I though the project was dead.
>>
>>32510218

Have a vampire Crobat fighting a Lycanroc
>>
>>32510436
I was thinking about having the little girl play a treasure hunt with them, they have to explore the house to find some specific items belonging to the ghosts of her family members who may or may not be willing to depart from them depending on how they choose to interact, too bad nobody of them played Luigi Mansion, I coul've put some references.
So far I planned an encounter with a bunch of Lampent, Honedge and Doublades disguised as objects lying around, two pretty strong Raticates in the cellar, a Mimikyu (first Gen 7 mon they meet) in a bedroom which they may upset but by mistaking him for a stuffed toy and ignoring him, a swarm of Duskull in a library that will swarm them if they make any noise and a levitating Stantler head trophy that will try to ram into them.
Also the Gengar summons a bunch of Gastlys and Haunters.

>>32510451
I overplayed Zubats by putting them in almost any cave but I'll consider putting a Crobat and maybe an Ariados or something else hiding in the attic guarding some items.

Also yeah, Totem pokemons are a thing in my setting, they can talk and they guard dungeons guarding forgotten relics, they already fought a totem Onyx in a cave complex.
>>
>>32510604
>they can talk
Gross.
Do you do anything special for stats or just give them a free Swords Dance, Agility, Quiver Dance, Calm Mind, Etc. before the battle starts.
>>
>That one autistic player in your group with a female Lucario who tried to make his character into some weird dark and edgy silent badass and got kicked out of the group

He was obese too.
>>
>>32510709
>they can talk
Just telepathically.

They are high level (this Gengar is level 50 and their parties are in the 27-30 range) and being a totem gives them a lot of bonuses, +4 base stat CSes (this Gengar has +2 Sp Atk and +1 to both Defenses), two additional abilities (Cursed Body and Hypnotic), double HP and minor bonuses to accuracy, evasion, skill checks and saves. Seems overpowered but I gotta pump them real good and always think of ways to mitigate damage in battles outside League rules, in the last major battle before the Gym they ganged up on one Team admin and he could only send a single pokemon out before going down.

>>32510745
I don't know if envy or feel sorry for those who have to deal with stuff like this, my groups are always pretty normal and I'd like to have a cringy weirdo for a change
>>
/vp/ really should talk about these games more. I know people are bored with this huge dry period of new games and people here could get genuine enjoyment out of this and make some friends. /vp/ is honestly the saddest board on 4chan during the droughts, there will be threads that stay up for days literally talking about nothing. Most of the board is just porn shit but even that's pointless with /aco/ and /h/. If there can be general threads for anime, showdown, and fangames like sage there should be a /ptt/ general.

Plus, its the only way to experience difficulty with just the amount of difficulty, story, combat, and variety people actually wish the series had.
>>
>>32510863
I haven't played any official Pokemon games since B&W because I was left behind for a while and didn't bother to catch up since XY looked pretty bad, I only play romhacks, fangames and Tabletop United, almost the exact same goes for my group
Only game I regret not having played yet is B2&W2
>>
>>32510897

You have a group? Let me in. I cut ties with mine after four years after having a really heated argument about Digletts.
>>
>>32510911
>argument about Digletts.
Go ahead.
>>
>>32510919

I know at least one of them browses this board and he would know it's me. I don't want to get into it but lines were crossed and it got personal.
>>
>>32510911
Sorry but we meet to play IRL only and we are italians and not very good English speakers, pretty sure I'm the only one with fluency decent enough to sustain a conversation, also they are normies and don't post here

>>32510919
Interested in the Diglett argument as well.
>>
>>32510919
>>32510960

One day I was trying to start a conversation so I said "Hey guys, you know since this game has attack ranges unlike the video games, it would be pretty much impossible to beat any pokemon who can fly or levitate with a Diglett or Dugtrio since they can't leave the ground. So melee attacks that would normally work in the video games like Slash and Sucker Punch simply could never hit an opponent that stayed off of the ground."

Then three of the guys flipped out on me and argued with me about it for hours, saying if you were of a certain trainer class you could do X or Y or whatever.

The only move in Dugtrio's natural movepool that could hit any pokemon that can stay airborne is Tri-Attack, and the only TMs that could do it are Sludge Bomb, Sludge Wave, Rock Slide, and Stone Edge. Now, since this isn't the video games and you can't just assume you'll have access to those four specific TMs and have used them on your Dugtrio (Why would you for Sludge Wave/Bomb?)
>>
>>32511078

Now, since this isn't the video games and you can't just assume you'll have access to those four specific TMs and have used them on your Dugtrio (Why would you for Sludge Wave/Bomb?), you probably don't have/didn't use the TMs and may have never had access to them in the first place. So without that select few specific TMs, there's nothing Dugtrio could hit an airborne pokemon with besides Tri Attack unless you're of a specific trainer class that has some way of getting around this. If you're not of a certain class you'd just get checked immediately. Honestly the classes that actually could help a Dugtrio get out of that situation probably don't have feats that are legal to use in sanctioned trainer battles anyways. That's what I said and that's what we argued about for like two hours. All the heated shit is irrelevant but there you go, that's the Diglett Argument.
>>
>>32511078
Was this a random observation or did it actively effect current gameplay? Sounds like it was a random observation.
>>
>>32511078
>>32511108

Also, I forgot Hyper Beam and I guess Alolan Dugtrio can use Flash Cannon.
>>
>>32511117

Just a random conversation starter. There weren't even any games going on at the time or anything.
>>
>>32511078
I had something similar happen before when I was playing with a single player, he tried to cheese the Electric/Psychic Gym with his Starmie by flying up to the gym's ceiling with his Sky speed and spamming Swift, which has a pretty long range. The gym leader was down to his last pokemon, a Psychic/Electric Computer-form Rotom, which even though it had Levitate and ranged attacks it was short of a couple squares and it couldn't reach the Starmie by any mean (every respectable gym has a tall as fuck ceiling).
I just ruled Rotom could extend the range of his attacks by making Focus Checks as a Shift Action to concentrate, and he had a pretty good Focus rank so he brought Starmie down in a couple turns. He was slightly salty but he accepted it. Both me and my players try to avoid these situations where the cheese is on the table and either party could easily reach it by talking it out first, sometimes we make custom rules to agree on ambiguos situations.

If Dugtrio's case came up I'd either suggest them to consider his weakness carefully and consider switching him with Pokemon that cover it or tell them to find a way to raise the ground, I don't know, get a pokemon with Groundsource or Burrowing and get it to pile some dirt for it to climb, or make a custom move that raises a column of ground.
I don't get how a conversation like this could get this heated, specially since it was fully hypothetical.
>>
>>32511192

I beat the first gym leader I ever fought in a PTA game because the rules were for the match to be a 1v1 Bug type battle. I had my Butterfree hit his Pinsir with Poison Powder and I just ordered Butterfree to fly around the arena as high as it could legally fly for the rest of the battle. It almost worked, but the battle was in a junkyard so my DM had the gym leader's Pinser collapse a wall of scrapped cars that came crashing down over my Butterfree, he ended up dodging by swooping into one of the car windows and then we had a situation where Butterfree was hiding in the back of the car while Pinsir was furiously trying to jam himself through one of the openings in the metal frame, with his Pinsirs gnashing inches away from Butterfree who remained out of reach. It was cool.

And yeah, I know switching out would fix the problem, but that was never the point of what I was saying.
>>
Played this ages ago, many different campaigns. Probably would not choose to play it again, even though I love the angle to pokemon with tabletop elements.
System just gets far too slow in combat, and Pokemon stick a little too closely to the video game mechanics to be quick or intuitive to set up and use.
Would like to finish work on a new pokemon rpg I've started but that takes an awful lot of time.

To GM and Players of PTA/PTU, what do you like and dislike about the system?

I really enjoy PTU. My group hasn't had a play session since last September, though; the GM didn't really have a plan and was going to ad lib the plot as he went along, but then it started getting ahead of him and he couldn't figure out where he was going to take it so he just put the game on hiatus. He has ideas for where to go now if it ever continues but no dates have been set to do so or anything like that.
I've been sitting on ideas for a PMD campaign in PTU for years and I keep telling the group I'll get to writing things down mechanically and getting maps and such, but I always procrastinate and never do get anything together.
>>
>>32511264
I think PTA/PTU are much better suited to a PMD campaign than a traditional pokemon campaign. Trainer shit really bogs it down. Really trying to figure out how to make trainers interesting but unobtrusive.
>>
>>32511277

There wouldn't be enough depth if we were playing as Pokemon. If you were say, a Totodile for example, what would you do regarding building your character? Just moves and stats? It's so much less freedom and control than doing it for six Pokemon plus a trainer and all their inventory. A PMD game would have to be mostly story/role-playing because it sure as shit wouldn't have interest combat when my only options are to scratch and water gun until someone stops moving.
>>
>>32511313
Six pokemon is far too many per player anyways
I think there is plenty of variety to be had in leveling up and learning new moves - I think about it like playing a spellcaster in D&D
>>
>Friends that like Pokémon don't like Pen and Paper RPGs
>D&D friends don't like Pokémon.
I just want to play the damn thing.
>>
>>32511252
Played only PTU as a GM and while I overall really like the system it's a little too slow when you have more than 2 players and it's easy to forget things when there are many NPCs and turn-based effects going on. Iit's not uncommon for either me or a player to realize their Pokemon was immune to that status or critical hit because of one of his abilities or that this enemy was supposed to be dead 2 turns ago because of the poison. We are slowly getting used to keeping track of everything though.
If anything I don't really like the fluff in the splatbooks and some of the changes in the playtests so we decide on a per-case basis which Abilities to change, and that's it.

I love how much easy it is to create and blend with the rest of the system your custom stuff, have to constantly restrain myself from going overboard and flooding the campaign with custom made variants, moves and equipment.
Also fixing both speed creep and stalling, more moveslots and abilities at once, slightly nerfing SE damage and some of the most broken in-game mechanics are enough to improve the Pokemon experience.
>>
Aren't ther other Pokemon tabletop games? Pokemon tabletop adventures is autistic garbage and Pokemon tabletop united is a little less garbage but hasn't updated for Sun and Moon and aparently it won't update for a while.

Someone has posted his own custom made S&M Pokedex and new move/ability list on the PTU forums but it's unpolished and I don't like some of his desing choices, I started working on my own version by modifying or adding stuff to his.

Thanks but I was looking for another one, but for the life of me can't remember how it was called only that it had a pokedex on the cover page.

The game we were in only had two players and the GM so combat wasn't bogged down that much, and the player that wasn't me picked a Hex Maniac and had a lot of support abilities in combat, so they got to interact in combat a lot (the setting was low fantasy medieval era so there was no Pokémon League and thus no League rules that would prevent trainer interruption). My trainer didn't do much in battles but it was fine and we just skipped their turn unless I said something ahead of time.
Combat was fine in the game, it was just the plot that fell apart. I do think bookkeeping would be a lot more simple with just one Pokémon and no trainer though, but it's just since you don't have a whole party to keep track of.
>>
>>32511313
You'd have to blend trainer and Pokémon data and have classes in the game. It'd require homebrew, I don't think it would work in vanilla PTU.

I have the PDF for another great one an old friend of mine made called Pokemon Tabletop Evolution, I think its great.

Player's Handbook
http://www.mediafire.com/file/d8tnm9m9h9w8mmh/PTE+Players+Handbook+1.0.zip

Pokedex
http://www.mediafire.com/file/a67n39z9nrlu3av/PTE+Pokedex+1.0.zip

I think this is the best Pokemon tabletop, I was brought in late in the project and even helped a little bit. I'm by no means the guy who did the main bulk of the work for this though.

If anyone looks through this and has questions on the system I can answer them.
