They never became the Champions. The credits roll when you beat Ghetsis. They don't get to win the League or register in the Hall of Fame until postgame, the non-canon part.

It would have been nice to have some continuity though the Memory Link though. Your past team and moves could have been recorded after getting the credits, brought to level 80, and then Hilbert/Hilda could have been placed deep inside a cave as a bonus boss.
