Play BW1 first if you want to feel like you're playing for the first time again. Otherwise just go with SM - they're fun games with more(and better) new ideas than XY and the shitmons are perfectly usable.

This was my first new Pokémon game since HGSS. I got it for free from Club Nintendo (RIP) and I was *still* disappointed. It's the easiest mainline game I've played, the region gets boring quickly, the plot was phoned-in, and most of the music tracks just aren't very good for Pokémon.

However, most of the new monsters are cool and a handful of tracks are beyond comfy.
