Because in gen 6, they had to make 3D models from the ground up for all 721 Pokemon, plus Amie animations, so it would have been a lot to ask them to conceptualize 30+ more Pokemon on top of what they already had to do.

That, and they started a trend of introducing a ton of gimmicky new forms to old Pokemon in an attempt to innovate the series (Megas, Alolan variants).

I don't see why anyone would go along with the idea that GF is actually trying to avoid 1,000+ Pokemon for some stupid made-up reason, especially when gen 7 is blazing by faster than any other gens, with Marshadow already being revealed (the alternative being that they actually learned from their mistakes and didn't include every new Pokemon's data in the games day-one, but knowing them, that's unlikely).

The first one is right. The number thing is sort of vague. In one aspect, I don't think they care how many pokemon they make, as it's inevitable they will reach it anyway. On the other, with the way they treated Megas, it's obvious that they think the number is taboo for some reason. To that I say, however, why do you even bother making a number label to begin with? The third is not really confirmed, but it is suspicious that the instant they introduced eviolite that no more pre-evos and new evos of old pokemon were made.

1000 isn't scary specifically, but there are many reasons to avoid having too many pokemon

It can be intimidating to new players, it can be hard to animate/balance/manage all of those pokemon from a design perspective, it becomes impossible to have them all in a game without pokemon bank (which explains moving the national dex to bank).

Even though it was depressing in gen 6/7 to finish the pokedex in a couple of afternoons of postgame, I much prefer having less pokemon of higher quality/variety, then having dozens of shit fillermon that are bad even in PU like illumise/stantler/elemental monkeys/etc

I'll agree with you on the Rhyhorn being the superior design part. In fact, as a kid, I was confused by that evolution, as I thought Rhyhorn looked a lot stronger than Rhydon. I couldn't wrap my young mind around how something that stood on two legs was stronger and faster than a tank rhino that ran on four.

But where your argument and design nitpicks fall apart is that nearly all of the evolutions you mention (electabuzz/magmar/rhydon) look even fucking GOOFIER and noisy than what they replace.

GameFreak is perfectly capable of hitting the 1000 Pokémon margin, they have the appropriate resources and finances to do it all in one generation. I doubt that we'll be getting 200 new Pokémon in one generation, and I doubt that the new games provided with that new generation will be full and wholesome. Every 3ds Pokémon game seems like it's rushed in some way, and there isn't a third version or sequel that rectifies issues and fixes them. It really sucked that ORAS and XY were rushed, there was so much potential.

I think a big problem with Digimon's recognizability is the inconsistency of appearances and digivolution paths. Everyone knows the original show lines because they were actual lines. Tentomon->Kabuterimon->Megakabuteriomon. Fuck, most people will know Megakabuterimon->Hercules-kabuterimon even though they never watched the show that long. But you start trying to figure out how you get to something else, good fucking luck because you are on your own; dinosaurs turn into Pegasus, robots spring up from dragons and fish, and plants can grow into bugs. You want to trigger someone who only knows basic Digimon, just show them that there have been times when Agumon digivolves into Leomon.
